Postpartum Anxiety Is Real: What It Looks Like and When to Get Help
Postpartum depression often gets the spotlight, but postpartum anxiety is just as real—and just as tough. If you’re a new mom constantly feeling on edge, filled with “what ifs,” or unable to relax even when your baby sleeps, you’re not alone.
I’ve been there myself. And now, as a therapist working with moms every day, I want to shed light on what postpartum anxiety really looks like—and when it’s time to get support.
What Postpartum Anxiety Really Feels Like
You may not even realize it’s anxiety. You just feel like your mind won’t stop, your body is tense, and no matter how much you try, you can’t seem to relax. Here are some common ways it shows up:
The 3 AM Worry Spiral
Your baby’s asleep—but your mind isn’t. You’re lying awake running through every possible “what if.” You can’t stop worrying about germs, feeding, sleep schedules, or your ability to bond.
Constant Checking
You find yourself checking your baby’s breathing every few minutes, even if they’re fine. You know it seems excessive, but you can’t help it.
Worst-Case Thinking
You’re at the store and suddenly feel gripped by fear. “What if someone takes my baby?” “What if I drop the car seat?” These thoughts are intrusive, and they feel real—even if nothing is wrong.
The Perfectionism Trap
You’re constantly researching the “best” bottle, sleep method, or organic formula. You feel like if you don’t get everything perfect, something bad will happen. It’s exhausting.
Physical Symptoms
Tight chest, racing heart, sweaty palms, shortness of breath. Sometimes it feels like a panic attack, sometimes it’s just a lingering tension that never fully goes away.
Avoiding the Outside World
Leaving the house feels overwhelming. Canceling plans or avoiding outings with your baby starts to feel like the only way to feel safe.
Quick to Snap
You’re more irritable than usual, and little things set you off. Then the guilt kicks in—and the cycle continues.
When Should You Get Help?
If you’re wondering whether this is just new mom stress or something more, here are a few signs it might be time to reach out:
- You’re not sleeping, even when the baby sleeps
- Your anxiety feels constant or is getting worse
- You’re having panic attacks or physical symptoms
- You’re avoiding people, places, or daily tasks
- You’re overwhelmed by intrusive or scary thoughts
- You feel like you’re not in control of your emotions or thoughts
Postpartum Anxiety Is Treatable—You Don’t Have to Stay Stuck
Therapy is a safe place to talk about what you’re feeling, without judgment. We’ll work together to explore what’s going on, what support you need, and how to feel more like yourself again.
Depending on your needs, therapy may include tools like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), nervous system regulation, or Brainspotting. In some cases, medication can also be helpful—but support starts with having someone to talk to who gets it.
You’re Not a Bad Mom
You’re not weak. You’re not broken. And you’re definitely not alone.
Postpartum anxiety is more common than most people realize, and getting help is a sign of strength—not failure. You deserve support. You deserve peace. And you deserve to enjoy this chapter of life with your baby.
If any of this sounds familiar, let’s talk.
I offer therapy in Ventura & Westlake Village and virtual support throughout California. You don’t have to go through this alone.
